A note on lyrical content
Our mission statement is "Inspiring Kids To Rock On Stage And In Life". We believe in this wholeheartedly. We're not just teaching music theory, and we're not just teaching songs. We're trying to help a student grow as an individual and community member through the wonders of music. In addition to the physical skills needed to operate their instruments, we think an understanding and appreciation of the music being learned is essential to their growth. Because of this, we put a tremendous amount of time ensuring that every piece of music taught at the school is artistically and historically important. We do not censor songs, however, we are not interested in songs with frivolous filth. Every song selected for shows or lessons is chosen for it’s educational and historical value. Every show is different, so we encourage every parent to look at the various shows/songs to determine if they think their student isn’t ready for a certain topic. If you are uncomfortable with a specific song content, please reach out to us. Some shows may inevitably include more curse words (like Green Day and Punk Rock), while others talk about darker horror movie topics (Metal), and others might acknowledge the existence of sex and drugs (almost everything). Still, the songs and themes we choose are selected to educated our students about a specific style, genre, or movement. For example, the song "Straight Edge" by Minor Threat, talks about drug use and uses some vulgar language to say it, but the purpose of the song is to show their fans that this behavior is not acceptable. They said that to be a good person, you should treat your body and neighbors with respect. In doing so, they created an entire social movement that encouraged good health practices and hard work, even in less than ideal conditions. An entire social movement was created from one song in less than one minute. That is inspiring. That is worth teaching.
